In 2004, Julien Leclercq started his career by creating the short film Transit, which delves into a retro-futuristic universe inhabited by creatures combining flesh and metal elements. Producers Franck Chorot and Gaumont were drawn to the short film. They immediately gave Leclercq an 8.7 million euro budget to create his debut feature picture, Chrysalis, which tells the narrative of a police officer (played by Albert Dupontel) searching for his wife's killer in 2025 Paris.

An oil well that is close to a camp for refugees amid the desert catches fire, endangering the lives of the people living there. After sending specialists to the location, the well operator understands that there is only one way to stop the disaster: blow up the oil well with nitroglycerin in less than a day. A formidable squad is then dispatched 800 kilometers distant to transfer 200 kg of explosives in two trucks against a substantial quantity of money. It will take the squad fewer than twenty hours to get to the oil well. It will take twenty hours to drive two trucks filled with nitroglycerin over rugged terrain, pass minefields, and navigate hazardous areas held by armed rebels. It's time to start racing against the clock.
