A Quiet Place: Day One Description
A pessimistic cancer patient named Samira "Sam" and her cat, Frodo, reside in a hospice outside of New York City. A hesitant Sam is talked into going on a group expedition to see a marionette performance in Manhattan by Reuben, a nurse. The gang witnesses meteor-like things falling from the sky while they are in the city. Not long later, the assembled throng and onlookers are attacked by hostile extraterrestrial beings. Sam is rendered unconscious by the explosion when a meteor strikes an ambulance.
Later on, Sam awakens inside the puppet theater alongside Frodo and other survivors, including Henri, who motions for her to keep silent. Military helicopters broadcast warnings to villagers, telling them to be quiet and hide until help arrives. Then Sam sees the bridges that lead out of Manhattan being bombed and destroyed by fighter aircraft, preventing the animals from leaving the island. Henri kills one of the survivors by mistake while attempting to calm down a terrified survivor.
That night, the building's emergency generator kicks on loudly as a result of the power grid outage. When Reuben flips it off, he draws the attention of a monster that devours him upon hearing his shirt shred. Sam, inconsolable, grabs Frodo and heads to Harlem. Because the animals cannot swim, the military declares that it is getting ready to evacuate South Street Seaport's civilian population via boat. People begin to leave buildings in groups toward the evacuation point, but the animals become aware of their packed movements and attack, causing a stampede. Sam runs away from Frodo, going in the other direction.
After escaping a flooded metro station, Eric, an English law student, meets Frodo and follows him back to Sam. Eric is in disbelief and follows Sam back to her apartment as she tries to persuade him to head south to the evacuation site. Eric discovers there that Sam is a well-known and published poet. Sam heads off on her own the following morning for Harlem, but Eric finds her and they travel on together. After unintentionally waking the animals, Sam and Eric escape inside a flooded subway car. Having exhausted all other options, the two must wade through the deep waters, finally rousing a latent monster that follows them but perishes in the process of escaping.
After finding themselves in a demolished church, Eric goes out by himself to pick up some painkillers for Sam while she is sleeping. After saving Frodo from a building site, he finds a gang of animals headed by a bigger one consuming the remains of an organic pod that resembles an egg. Sam tells Eric that she used to go to Patsy's after her father's jazz performance in Harlem and order pizza with him, something Sam had always wanted to do before she passed away. By driving her to the club, getting pizza from a different store, and entertaining her with a magic card trick, Eric grants Sam's request.
Sam and Eric spot boats on the river that are carrying people fleeing Manhattan. Creatures begin to gather along the coast as the two depart together. After giving Eric her jacket and Frodo, Sam leaves to break vehicle windows in order to divert animals. Car alarms go off as a result, drawing the animals away from the coast. In the meantime, Henri pulls Eric and Frodo into a boat after they leap into the sea. Then Eric discovers a message that Sam left in the jacket, thanking him for encouraging Frodo to live and urging him to take care of her.
Sam enters a desolate street while she's listening to "Feeling Good" by Nina Simone on her iPod. Sam smiles, accepting her doom, and pulls out her headphones, revealing a beast behind her.
