The Northman 2022 full movie

Robert Eggers is the director of the 2022 American epic historical action movie The Northman, which he co-wrote with Sjón. The film, which is based on the mythology of Amleth, has a large ensemble cast that includes Ethan Hawke, Björk, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård (who also produced), Anya Taylor-Joy, Gustav Lindh, and Nicole Kidman. The main character is Amleth, a Viking prince who goes on a mission to get revenge for his father's death. Norse mythology has a strong effect on the movie.

After meeting to explore potential collaborations, Eggers decided to take on the picture as his third project, fulfilling Skarsgård's long-standing desire to produce a Viking movie. Filming took place in sites around Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and Iceland from August to December 2020. A large portion of the actors began filming in October 2019.

On March 28, 2022, The Northman debuted at Rigoletto Cinema in Stockholm. On April 13, 2022, it made its theatrical debut in a few different nations. On April 22, it opened to great reviews in theaters in the United States, with particular attention paid to director Eggers, the writing, photography, visual effects, soundtrack, and acting performances. Despite its poor performance at the global box office, the movie went on to become profitable on the VOD and other post-theatrical markets.

The Northman movie analysis

King Aurvandill comes to the island of Hrafnsey in AD 895, where he is reunited with Prince Amleth, his heir, and his wife, Queen Gudrún. Heimir, Aurvandill's jester, is in charge of the ceremony that the father and son take part in to get Amleth ready for his ultimate succession. Amleth swears to get revenge on his father should Aurvandill be killed rather than live a life of humiliation when Heimir informs him that his fate is set and cannot be changed. Amleth's despicable uncle Fjölnir organizes a palace takeover the following morning, beheading Aurvandill himself, looting the hillfort, and taking Gudrún with him. After barely escaping Fjölnir's assassins, Amleth vows to get revenge as she departs via boat.

A few years later, a mature Amleth leads a group of Vikings as a berserker. He meets a Seeress at the temple of Svetovit after destroying a town in Garðaríki. The Seeress warns Amleth that his fate is linked to that of a Maiden King and commands him to keep his swear of vengeance. Not long later, he finds out that "Fjölnir the Brotherless" is now an Icelandic sheep farmer after losing his crown to Harald of Norway. Amleth disguises himself as a slave and boards a ship that is transporting slaves to Iceland. He meets Olga, a Slavic enslaved lady who represents herself as a witch. When they go to Fjölnir's farm, Amleth finds out that his mother wed the man and gave birth to a son called Gunnar.

After following a vixen one night, Amleth meets a he-witch who helps arrange a seance between Amleth and Heimir's skull—whom Fjölnir had also killed. Amleth learns from Heimir about Draugr, a mystical blade that can only be pulled at the Gates of Hel or night. Amleth goes into a barrow and takes the sword from the Mound Dweller, the undead. After returning to the farm, he hides the sword. Amleth is chosen to play a game of Knattleikr against another farm the next day. When the rival team's commander slaughters the opposition until he and Amleth are the only ones remaining, the game devolves into violence. Unaware that Amleth is his half-brother, Gunnar looks up to him and nearly dies while attempting to draw the other player away. However, Amleth saves him and viciously beats the other player to death. Thorir, Fjölnir's adult son, rewards him with overseer responsibilities and the ability to select a bride.

Amleth and Olga make love during the nighttime festivities, promising to defeat Fjölnir together. Amleth murders important members of Fjölnir's estate inexplicably throughout several nights, graphically displaying their disfigured body parts by arranging them into the shape of a horse. This gives Fjölnir and the rest of the estate the impression that a demonic entity is attacking them. Olga adds fly agaric, a strong psychedelic, to the food supply. Thorir believes that the culprits are Christian slaves. This allows Amleth to enter Fjölnir's house. Amleth reveals his identity to Gudrún. She responds by saying that she was a slave to Aurvandill and that Amleth was conceived by rape. Gudrún also confesses that she orchestrated Fjölnir's coup because she wanted both Aurvandill and Amleth dead. She then tries to seduce Amleth, who, after a moment, rejects her. Enraged, Amleth kills Thorir and cuts out his heart.

Gudrún demands that Amleth be killed after disclosing to Fjölnir who Amleth is. Amleth offers to exchange Olga's life for Thorir's heart, but Fjölnir chooses to murder her. Amleth submits to being taken prisoner and undergoes torture to discover where Thorir's heart is. A group of ravens sent by Odin free Amleth from his bonds, and Olga comes to his aid. Amleth chooses to give up on getting retribution, and the two make plans to flee by boat to his relatives in the Orkney Islands. However, Amleth has a vision while on board the ship and learns that Olga is expecting twins, one of whom will be the Maiden King that the Seeress has predicted. Despite Olga's pleadings, Amleth dives overboard and swims onshore, thinking that he cannot escape his fate, realizing that he and his children will never be safe while Fjölnir lives.

Amleth releases the slaves and murders Fjölnir's surviving soldiers back at the farm. Amleth is assaulted by Gudrún and Gunnar while looking for Fjölnir. After being hurt, he kills them in self-defense. Upon seeing his son and wife dead, Fjölnir icily instructs Amleth to meet him at the Gates of Hel, which are the crater of the volcano Hekla. Amleth and Fjölnir engage in a brutal Holmgang while both are nude, ending with Fjölnir being stabbed and Amleth being decapitated. Amleth sees Olga holding his two children as he passes away and telling him they are safe, but she also begs him to let go. Amleth is carried through the gates of Valhöll by a valkyrie.
