Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins are among the ensemble cast members. The movie takes place in a made-up galaxy where the military of the imperialist Motherworld, known as the Imperium, is invading an agricultural colony on the moon Veldt. Noble leaves, leaving a "Jimmy" robot and a few troops to manage the harvest. After being bullied by a friend, Jimmy starts to mature. Villager Kora discovers the other troops getting ready to rape a villager and, with the assistance of Jimmy, a defector, and Aris, a soldier repulsed by his own comrade's behavior, kills them. Kora informs the villagers that if they don't put up a fight, Noble will murder them when he comes.

Kora and Gunnar head to Providence, a port town, to enlist troops, including the disgraced Imperium general Titus, for the village's defense. She tells Gunnar that she was adopted and given the name Arthelais by Imperium commander Balisarius after he slaughtered her family and wiped out the inhabitants of her home planet. She had previously served the Imperium as a soldier. She joined Motherworld princess Issa's protection team, anticipating that she would put an end to the Imperium's conquests. But even so, the royal family was killed at Issa's coronation, and Balisarius proclaimed himself regent before they resumed their conquests.

When the two arrive in Providence, they encounter a criminal and smuggler named Kai. Kai offers to take them to recruit Titus. While traveling, Kai introduces them to two more fighters: the skilled swordswoman Nemesis, who has been enhanced with cybernetics, and the beast tamer Tarak. On a distant moon, the group finds Titus in a drunken stupor in a gladiator arena. After Kora suggests that Titus seek revenge for his fallen warriors, Titus eventually agrees to join. They then head to Sharaan to meet them, using Gunnar's previous dealings with the Bloodaxes. As Devra and the other rebels leave Sharaan, Darrian offers to protect the hamlet and brings along a few rebels, including Milius. When they go, Noble shows up and exterminates its people as retaliation for supporting the rebels.

Kai tells Kora that he has one more package to drop off and admits that her desire for him to leave his life as a smuggler has had an impact on him. He takes the group to a trade station where Noble's ship is docked. Once they arrive, he betrays the group to Noble, revealing that he had always planned to do so in order to collect the bounties on their heads. Noble identifies Nemesis as the assassin of several Imperial officials in revenge for her children's deaths, Tarak as a criminal and former prince, and Kora and Titus as deserters. When Kai orders Gunnar to immobilize Kora, he kills Kai and sets Kora free instead.The other fighters are also let free; in the subsequent conflict, Darrian loses his life and Kora takes Noble's life. Later, Jimmy follows the remaining warriors as they make their way back to Veldt, observing them from a distance. After speaking with Balisarius on an astral plane, Noble's corpse is found by Motherworld troops, and he is raised from the dead. Balisarius demands that Noble put an end to the rebellion and bring Kora to him alive so he may personally execute her.
