In late 1941, the Luftwaffe is routinely bombing London as the United Kingdom struggles to stop Nazi Germany's aspirations to seize control of Europe during World War II. With the tacit support of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Brigadier Colin Gubbins gets ready to launch Operation Postmaster, an undercover black-ops sabotage mission meant to thwart the Nazis' U-boat resupply operation on the Spanish-controlled island of Fernando Po. The German submarines are continuously sinking their supply and aid ships. Gubbins recruits Gus March-Phillips to assemble a ground crew to destroy the Italian supply ship Duchessa d'Aosta and two tugboats linked to her while SOE operatives Richard Heron and Marjorie Stewart leave by train.

Gus and his allies, Freddy Alvarez, Graham Hayes, and Danish naval officer Anders Lassen (the only non-British subject to get the Victoria Cross) set off on a leisurely cruise to Fernando Po, using the neutral Swedish fishing boat Maid of Honor. They divert to a Nazi-controlled area of the Canary Islands for a rescue operation after learning that SOE saboteur Geoffrey Appleyard, who Gubbins had sent ahead on the idea that Gus would express interest in having him on the squad, had been apprehended by Gestapo agents.

Arriving early on Fernando Po, Marjorie, Heron, and the latter utilize the 'illegal' gaming hall to gain support for Gus' squad while Marjorie seduces Heinrich Luhr, the head SS leader. Gus orders his crew to sail past a British naval blockade of Nazi-occupied West Africa after discovering that the Duchessa plans to leave three days earlier than expected, even though they are aware that they will be caught if their illegal mission is detected.

Despite the Italian attache's misgivings, Luhr has had the Duchessa's hull strengthened, Marjorie and Heron find out the night before the planned raid. Scarcely informed of this ahead of schedule, a mole in Gubbins's staff informs senior leadership about the plan, leading Gus and Appleyard to determine that the best course of action is to steal the ships and use them as a bartering chip. The raid is successful, and Marjorie shoots Luhr in the head, even though Luhr soon figures out when Marjorie's act starts to slip. Even when the gang delivers the boats to a British navy outside of Lagos, they are taken into custody. Their actions have not only severely damaged the Nazi naval strength but have also allowed the United States, who recently entered the war following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, to join the European theater. As they await court-martial, they are rescued and recruited by Churchill to join his 'Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare'.

Before the closing credits, a montage of facts reveals the post-op actions of many protagonists: Before Marjorie started her acting career and Gus became a war hero, he led numerous such attacks throughout the conflict; To the king's amusement, Appleyard would receive multiple commendations for his role in the mission; Hayes would go on to become a highly skilled spy known for his ability to withstand a year of Nazi torture without breaking; Lassen would continue to participate in raids outside the group until his death in 1945; and Ian Fleming, who had been part of Gubbins' inner circle during this time, would draw inspiration for his James Bond novels from Operation Postmaster.
