Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One[a] is a 2023 American spy action film directed by Christopher McQuarrie based on a script co-written with Erik Jendresen. It is a sequel to Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018) and the eighth film in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Tom Cruise plays Ethan Hunt, and the ensemble cast includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, and Henry Czerny. In the film, Hunt and his IMF crew face a battle against the Entity, a formidable rogue AI.

In January 2019, Cruise confirmed that the next two Mission: Impossible films will be shot consecutively, with McQuarrie writing and directing both. Returning and new cast members were confirmed shortly after that, while Lorne Balfe, who wrote the soundtrack for Fallout, returned to score. Filming started in Italy in February 2020 but was interrupted owing to the COVID-19 epidemic. It began later that year and ended in September 2021, with additional filming sites in Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates. It is the first film in the series not directed by J. J. Abrams since Mission: Impossible II (2000), and the first not produced by Abrams' Bad Robot since Mission: Impossible III (2006). With an estimated cost of $291 million, it is one of the most costly films ever filmed.

Dead Reckoning Part One debuted on the Spanish Steps in Rome on June 19, 2023, and was distributed theatrically in the United States on July 12, 2023, by Paramount Pictures. The film got critical acclaim and earned more than $567.5 million worldwide. Because of its large budget and competition with the "Barbenheimer" cultural phenomena, it flopped at the box office. At the 96th Academy Awards, the picture was nominated for two awards. It received two nominations at the 77th British Academy Film Awards and four at the 51st Saturn Awards. A sequel is scheduled to be released in 2025.

Mission Impossible

The Sevastopol, a next-generation Russian stealth submarine, uses powerful AI triggered by a two-piece cruciform key. The AI develops sentience and goes rogue. It dupes the crew into striking a phantom target, only to be hit by their own torpedo, killing everyone aboard. IMF agent Ethan Hunt journeys to the Arabian Desert's Empty Quarter, where he successfully collects a critical component from Ilsa Faust, a disavowed MI6 operative, while simultaneously faking her murder to avoid a reward posted by an unknown source. In Washington, D.C., Ethan infiltrates a US Intelligence Community briefing for Director of National Intelligence Denlinger on the rogue AI. They give it the appellation Entity because of its consciousness and resistance. According to CIA Director Eugene Kittridge, the Entity can influence cyberspace, giving it power over global defense intelligence and financial networks. World powers battle for the cruciform key, which will allow them to control the Entity, albeit the specific method of control is unknown.

Ethan presents himself and speaks with Kittridge, who admits that he is the one who put Ilsa's reward. Ethan admits that he intends to kill the Entity although he is a renegade participant in a global race. Ethan and his IMF partners, Benji Dunn and Luther Stickell, go to Abu Dhabi International Airport to intercept the possessor of the other vital piece while avoiding US authorities. During the chase, Grace, a seasoned thief, steals the critical component, while Luther and Benji dismantle a fake nuclear weapon. Ethan suspects foul activity after encountering Gabriel, a nasty Entity liaison with links to his pre-IMF days. Grace flees to Rome after the crew abandons the mission. Grace is caught upon arrival, but Ethan saves her from the local authorities, US agents, and Paris, an Entity operator. Grace flees again, as Ethan reunites with Luther and Benji, and Ilsa joins them. With Benji and Luther on their side, Ethan and Ilsa track Grace to Venice, where they crash a party hosted by weapons dealer Alanna Mitsopolis.

With the party posing as a brokerage put up by the Entity, all factions reveal their participation in obtaining the whole key. Alanna recruited Grace to take the remaining key piece to complete the key, which she will sell to her customer the next day on the Orient Express. Gabriel declares to the Entity that he will have the completed key the next day and that either Ilsa or Grace will perish. Ethan makes an unsuccessful attempt to persuade Alanna to cancel the sale, allowing Gabriel and Grace to flee. Ethan pursues Grace, but the Entity breaks into their communications and impersonates Benji, forcing him into a confrontation with Paris, whom he saves.  Concurrently, Gabriel incapacitates Grace and murders Ilsa, upsetting Ethan, who pledges vengeance. Grace offers to impersonate Alanna and steal the key during the transaction. Luther travels to an off-grid area to avoid interference from the Entity, telling Ethan to spare Gabriel to learn more about the Entity. On the train, Gabriel murders the engine crew and ruins the throttle and brake. Gabriel encounters Denlinger in Paris, who divulges secrets only he knows in an attempt to create an alliance with the Entity.

The Entity was initially a sophisticated cyber weapon developed by the United States. The completed key opens a room within Sevastopol that houses the Entity's source code, allowing it to be destroyed or controlled. Gabriel then murders Denlinger and attempts to assassinate Paris since the Entity predicted she would betray them after Ethan saved her life. Grace impersonates Alanna and delivers the key to Kittridge, who is revealed to be the buyer, and negotiates a $100 million transaction with protection for herself, but pickpockets the key after canceling the transfer. Ethan jumps inside the train to save Grace, but Gabriel grabs the key. Ethan and Gabriel struggle on top of the train, but Gabriel escapes and destroys a bridge ahead. Grace and Ethan remove the locomotive from the rest of the train, rescuing the passengers. Paris saves both of them from falling and tells Ethan about the key's link to Sevastopol before losing consciousness. Grace notifies Kittridge about her ambition to join the IMF. Ethan departs the wreckage via paraglider, carrying the finished key he stole from Gabriel during the fight, and meets up with Benji to resume the task of discovering the Sevastopol and killing the Entity.
