Watch The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die Full Movie

The Saxon Stories of Bernard Cornwell serves as the basis for the 2023 British historical drama film The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which was written and directed by Edward Bazalgette and Martha Hillier. It serves as both the television show's epilogue and its finale, The Last Kingdom. Cast members returning to their respective roles include Ross Anderson, Ilona Chevakova, Harry Gilby, Mark Rowley, Arnas Fedaravicius, Cavan Clerkin, James Northcote, Ewan Horrocks, Rod Hallett, and Steffan Rhodri. The movie debuted on Netflix on April 14, 2023.

Anlaf, an Irish Viking monarch, learns that Edward, the Anglo-Saxon king, is critically sick and sets out for Northumbria with his army. Three boys are left behind when Edward passes away quickly; none of them was given his original name. Lady Edgifu and Edmund, his youngest son, escape to Bebbanburg, the home of Edward's erstwhile friend Uhtred. Despite being retired from combat, Uhtred prepares to stop Edward's elder son Aethelstan from attacking his younger brother Aelfweard after learning of this. Ingrith declares that "seven kings must die" for England to unify before Uhtred departs.

When Uhtred arrives at Aegelesburg, Aelfweard is getting ready to repel Aethelstan's approaching onslaught. Soon after, Aethelstan and his counselor Ingilmundr show there and foil a trap that Aelfweard has prepared. Although Uhtred persuades Aelfweard to submit amicably, Aethelstan promptly murders him and slaughters his soldiers. After Aethelstan ascends to the Saxon throne, his secret admirer Ingilmundr exhorts him to carry out his grandfather's vision of bringing all Christians and England together.

After the death of the previous Northumbrian king, RÅ«gnvaldr, Aethelstan assumed control of Eoferwic and demanded tribute from all foreign rulers, failing which they would be conquered and compelled to undergo forced baptism. After seeing the demolition of pagan structures, Uhtred arrives and finds out that King Hywel Dda has bowed to Aethelstan following the kidnapping of his son. When Uhtred learns of Aethelstan's connection to Ingilmundr, he becomes suspicious that someone is lying to him. Aldhelm alerts Uhtred about Ingilmundr's covert plot to have him assassinated, and Uhtred promptly returns to Bebbanburg. Aethelstan then calls Aldhelm a traitor and has him hung as a result of his deeds. When Ingilmundr comes to Bebbanburg to seize the fortress, he is soon apprehended since he is ignorant that Uhtred has escaped. Later, after Uhtred is tricked by Ingilmundr's servant into falling into a trap set by Aethelstan's warriors, Osbert is forced to give up Bebbanburg. Unable to murder Uhtred, Aethelstan banishes him from England and takes Osbert and Edmund into captivity, sending them to Thelwael.

Aethelstan's imminent victory is announced to the rulers of Strathclyde, Orkney, Shetland, and Man by Anlaf, who is hosting a council of kings on the Isle of Man, along with Prince Domnal. Aethelstan invades Scotland, compelling King Constantin and the other kings to join an alliance even though they first reject the invitation to form an alliance with a pagan. After being discovered by the Danes and sent to Shetland, a weaker Uhtred discovers that Ingilmundr is a Danish spy. When he meets with Anlaf and the other kings, they ask Uhtred to kill Aethelstan in order to prevent war.

Upon arriving in Wintanceaster, Uhtred makes a fruitless attempt to persuade Aethelstan to halt his conquest. After that, Uhtred goes back to Bebbanburg, where he is told by Eadgifu that Anlaf has stormed the castle and imprisoned Ingrith and the ordinary people in a cave where they will perish. After Ingilmundr slaughters the Saxons at Thelwael, Osbert and Edmund manage to remain concealed and live, as Uhtred finds out when he arrives. Aethelstan apologizes, makes amends with Uhtred, and decides to halt Anlaf's invasion but declines assistance. Anlaf has gathered his troops at Brunanburh, and Uhtred and his friends go to fight him knowing that Aethelstan would probably perish.

Anlaf has gathered his troops at Brunanburh, and Uhtred and his friends go to fight him knowing that Aethelstan would probably perish. Due to their extreme numerical disadvantage, Uhtred and Aethelstan's soldiers in the Battle of Brunanburh withdraw tactically, allowing Saxon cavalry to flank from behind. Domnal and the other kings' heirs are slain in the confusion. Uhtred is severely hurt while trying to save Aethelstan after seeing Ingilmundr attack him.

Following the fight, Anlaf is swiftly abandoned by the other kings, and Ingilmundr, who was a captive, is put to death. When Uhtred is critically injured, Aethelstan assists in getting him back to Bebbanburg. Finan surmises that the prophecy that "seven kings must die" is only partially fulfilled by the deaths of Edward and the five heirs—five kings who will never be crowned. In return for Aethelstan consenting to name Edmund his only successor, Uhtred promises to swear Northumbria to him. This allows Aethelstan to become the first king of a unified England, realizing his grandfather King Alfred's ideal. As he appears to be about to pass away, Uhtred sees numerous of his departed companions waiting for him in a vision of Valhalla.
