A 2019 American epic space opera film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (also titled Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker) was produced, co-written, and directed by J.J. Abrams. It is the last installment of the nine-part "Skywalker Saga" and the third movie of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, after The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017). It is produced by Lucasfilm and Abrams' Bad Robot and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Carrie Fisher, Domhnall Gleeson, Harrison Ford, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams are among the ensemble cast members. The Rise of Skywalker, which takes place a year after The Last Jedi, follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron as they lead the Resistance's last struggle against Kylo Ren, the Supreme Leader, and the First Order, who are supported by Emperor Palpatine, the Sith Lord.
In August 2015, Colin Trevorrow and his colleague Derek Connolly were hired to direct and write the script for Episode IX, following earlier claims that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would write the screenplay. Both Trevorrow and Connolly eventually maintain narrative credit with Abrams and Chris Terrio. After creative disagreements with producer Kathleen Kennedy, Trevorrow departed the film in September 2017, and Abrams took over as director. John Williams, who composed the music for the previous films in the series, came back to complete this one-of-a-kind composition. At Pinewood Studios in England, principal photography started in August 2018 and ended in February 2019. Post-production was finished in November 2019. With a $416 million budget, it's the third most costly movie ever produced.
On December 16, 2019, The Rise of Skywalker had its Hollywood debut. On December 20, it was distributed nationwide. while receiving conflicting reviews from critics, it went on to earn over $1.077 billion globally, ranking as the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2019 while being the least successful of the trilogy. In addition to three nominations for Best Special Visual Effects, Best Original Music, and Best Sound at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards, it was also shortlisted for three awards at the 92nd Academy Awards (Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Editing). At the 46th Saturn Awards, it took home five prizes, including Best Science Fiction Film.
